In the fast-paced and ever-changing world of forex and stock trading, it can become easy to get overworked and overstressed. The numbers never sleep, and to stay informed and at the top of your game, for yourself and your clients, you often sacrifice sleep as well.

My name is Samuel Leach, and I am a forex and stock trading professional. My passion for this industry started while attending university and I have successfully built my training company, Samuel & Co. Trading based on my experiences in learning the trade. I currently lead a team of more than 60 and I am faced every day with new concerns and issues to tackle.

The greatest ways in which I support my team are in continued education, motivation, and listening. We must perform as our best selves for those that we lead so that they can, in turn, perform their best for the organization.

As the unsurmountable reality of the COVID-19 pandemic persists, affecting our communities and our global economy, businesses have made many sacrifices to stay afloat. Millions of people around the globe lost their jobs, and many of those who have been lucky enough to keep their jobs have had to pivot in their current roles and take on new challenges such as an increased workload, remote work, and dual roles as parents/caregivers and employees.

According to an APA Stress in America survey conducted in May, 70% of employed adults say the economy is a significant source of stress in their lives.

With no clear end in sight, I ask myself, how can we, as leaders, better provide for our employees so we are not just surviving, but thriving? How can we support our employees through the mental, emotional, and physical fatigue brought on by this pandemic, and how can we sustain this support through all facets of business and interpersonal relationships?

There are three significant ways I see that leaders can support their employees during times of unsurmountable stress.

Cultivating Resilience

We are moving into our second year of living with our world turned upside down. This means that our “new normal” is essentially becoming just the “normal” and we need to surge ahead on the path to success.

Building resilience against hardship is something that business leaders should excel at. As leaders, we must identify our pain points, in the most recent past and in our future months ahead, and work hard to develop a plan to ensure ourselves, our employees, and our businesses are resilient enough to persevere.

Preparing for the Road Ahead

For several years, things had been on a steady incline with no sight of a possible economic downturn. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, leaders around the world sprang into immediate action, responding to the crisis and attending to all matters of urgency.

The year 2020 has been an eye-opening year for all of us. Leaders in business must learn from this unfortunate and unpredictable series of events and forge ahead better prepared for anything the future may bring. Instead of sitting back and pretending that you must wait for the storm to pass, become the leader you were born to be and build a strong company that will stand up to any challenges that may come this year or in the future.

Practicing Stable Compassion

As I have mentioned, leaders and businesses are nothing without the strong, dedicated team that they build and surround themselves with. Ensuring your employees are performing their best both professionally and personally will only help you rise to the top faster than the rest.

We are living in a very difficult era and, as leaders, we need to be compassionate to those experiencing stress, loneliness, and depression during such an unfamiliar time. A global survey conducted by Mercer found that the majority of the 270 insurance companies surveyed rate mental health as being as much of a risk as smoking.

Being a leader means understanding your employees’ needs and feelings of discomfort. Employees do not need to be coddled, but they do need to feel understood. Provide that sense of compassion and stability that is needed for one to succeed. A good employee can make a business great — take care of those who support your business.
